RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team will look to maintain its top spot in the conference standings this week as it hosts the UT Arlington Mavericks on Saturday afternoon in the Fowler Events Center.
The Lancers are 7-1 in the conference and maintain a one-game lead over the Abilene Christian Wildcats, who are 5-1. CBU is coming off a road trip sweep in Utah, where they defeated the Utah Tech Trailblazers and the Utah Valley Wolverines by a combined 16 points to remain undefeated in conference road games.
This week's competition will be the UT Arlington Mavericks, who sit at 2-5 in the WAC standings and are in fifth place overall. Last time these two teams met this season, the Lancers dominated the Mavericks on New Year's Day, 85-64 in Riverside. In that victory, the Lancers' domination on the glass was the key to victory as they outrebounded the Mavericks 50-36 in the 20+ point victory. Five Lancers scored in double-figures, led by Lauren Olsen, who scored 23 points on 50% shooting. Overall, CBU is 7-2 in the season series against UTA and has posted a 4-0 record in the Fowler Events Center against them.
Perimeter shooting and rim protection will be two key statistics to keep an eye on in this matchup. CBU and UTA are two of the best rim-protecting teams in the nation, ranking in the top 30 nationally in blocks and blocks per game. A large reason for the strength is the play of Emma Johansson for CBU and Kira Reynolds for UTA. Johansson and Reynolds are both in the top five in the NCAA in blocks and blocks per game, with both of them averaging nearly three per contest. The other key stat to watch will be the perimeter shooting. CBU is one of the best three-point shooting teams in the country, ranking in the top 35 in made threes and the top ten in attempts. On the flip side, UTA is #2 in the NCAA in three-point percentage defense, allowing just a 23.5% clip from opponents.
