RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team kept up its winning ways on Saturday as it routed the UT Arlington Mavericks 83-55 behind a career day from Filipa Barros.
The win for CBU moves them to 8-1, tops in the Western Athletic Conference through nine games, while the Mavericks plummet to 2-7 in conference play and 8-13 overall.
Filipa Barros's impact was felt from the jump as the redshirt junior guard connected on four triples in the first quarter and scored 14 of CBU's first 20 points. The Lancers' lead ballooned to 24 points in the second period as the CBU defense ratcheted up and would wind up forcing 14 first-half turnovers on the Mavericks. Barros' scoring onslaught continued, and she would nearly outscore the Mavericks' entire team at halftime, scoring 23 points to UTA's 24 total.
CBU did not let off the gas pedal in the second half as the lead jumped over 30 points in the frame, as the Lancer bench got in on the scoring fun. The CBU bench would bring home the victory, playing out the majority of the fourth quarter, as the Lancers won convincingly 83-55 over the Mavericks for their second home win of the season against UTA.
Barros was the story of the afternoon with a career-best 32 points, becoming just the seventh Lancer in the DI era to eclipse the 30-point mark. Filipa hit her 30-point mark with extreme efficiency, shooting 9-12 from the floor and an incredible 8-10 from the perimeter. Barros's eight triples were also a career best and were the most made by a Lancer this season. Her eight triples also tied her for fourth in CBU's NCAA era for threes hit in a single game. Barros also displayed her incredible defensive prowess, leading the team in rebounds with eight and in steals with five.
Lauren Olsen was the only other Lancer in double-figures with 13 points, while Sofia Alonso would record a season-best six assists in quality minutes off the bench. CBU's defense held the Mavericks to 28% shooting from the floor and forced 23 turnovers.
NEXT: The Lancers will hit the road next week for a pair of matches in the Lone Star State, beginning with a trip to Tarleton State on Thursday, February 5, at 5 PM PT.
