RIVERSIDE --- California Baptist honored seven seniors before Saturday's meeting with San Diego State, a match that could have elevated the Lancers to the top of the Pac-12. However, after 90 minutes, no goals had been scored, ending Saturday in a draw that sets up a complicated closing two weeks of the regular season.
Â
With Saturday's draw, the Lancers move to ten points in the Pac-12 standings, placing CBU in a tie with Oregon State for first place. OSU lost 4-3 to Cal Poly on Saturday, leaving the possibility that the Lancers could have owned first place outright had CBU been victorious.
Â
Now tied entering the final regular season match of the conference season, the Lancers need a win, paired with an OSU draw or loss, to clinch the Pac-12 regular season championship and the top seed in the conference tournament.
Â
A win on Saturday would have also clinched a home match for the Lancers in the conference semifinal. CBU, Oregon State, San Diego State, UC San Diego, and Cal Poly remain in the hunt for the conference's top two seeds, which draw the right to host in the postseason.
Â
While a goal was not to be found, the Lancers showcased domination on the offensive side as CBU controlled possession for 70 percent of the match. 62 percent of CBU's time with the ball was on their attacking side of the field.
Â
Through their hour-plus of possession, the Lancers rifled off 15 shots, compared to just one from the Aztecs. However, only two of those attempts finished on frame. Drew Hardin had a look at goal that was denied by an SDSU team save, and then Stavros Charalampous saw his second-half attempt be denied by goalkeeper Nic Diana.
Â
On the defensive side, freshman Ulrik Stroem did not face a shot on goal, as he concluded the evening with his seventh shutout of the season.
Â
Saturday marks the first shutout of the Lancers in 713 days, ending a goal-scoring streak of 32 matches. The last time CBU was held without a goal was November 3, 2024.
Â
Seven seniors were recognized before Saturday's match, as CBU hosted Senior Night. Those seniors were: Charalampous, Hardin, Luis Borrero, Hugo Do Rego, Felix Ezekwuka, JR Gawel, and Uly Martinez.
Â
One match now remains in the conference regular season for both the Lancers and Oregon State, and the two matches will come a week apart. The Lancers will conclude their Pac-12 season on Saturday, October 24, with a visit to UC San Diego. OSU wraps up the season against Gonzaga on October 31. The Lancers will need a win in San Diego, paired with either an OSU draw or loss, to clinch the conference's top seed.
Â
CBU will be back in action before their visit to San Diego, as the Lancers will visit UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday in a Big West/Pac-12 Crossover. The non-conference meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m.
