RIVERSIDE --- A 2-0 week to open the Pac-12 season has garnered weekly recognition for two Lancers. With a combined four goals and two assists between the duo, senior Stavros Charalampous and freshman Justin Ojo have been recognized by the conference office.
The duo helped the Lancers to a pair of victories to start their first season in the Pac-12. CBU kicked off the conference season with a 5-2 victory over Gonzaga in Spokane and followed it up with a 3-1 win over Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
For their efforts, Charalampous has been named the Defensive Player of the Week, while Ojo claims Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Charalampous aided a CBU defense that held opponents to 1.5 goals per match last week. During the Lancers' six-match win streak, opponents are averaging 0.5 goals per match. CBU's win streak is the longest since the program transitioned to Division I in 2018.
On top of his efforts on the defensive end, Charalampous also contributed to CBU's attacking side by dishing an assist in each of the Lancers' wins last week. Both came on long balls down the field, including a 40-yard ball to Felix Ezekwuka on Sunday that set up the first goal of the day. Charalampous added the Lancers' second goal when he scored off assists from Drew Hardin and Uly Martinez.
Charalampous now has seven goals and seven assists in four seasons with the Lancers.
Ojo earned his Offensive Player of the Week award after netting a hat trick in CBU's victory over Gonzaga. The hat trick was just the fourth in CBU's Division I era, as Ojo became the third CBU student-athlete to achieve the feat. His first two goals came in a nine-minute stretch near the end of the first half, and he added his third strike early into the final 45 minutes.
The freshman added a fourth goal on Sunday, the Lancers' third of a 3-1 win over Cal Poly. Originally scored an own goal, the decision has since been changed to award Ojo the tally after he fired a shot on frame that was deflected in by a Cal Poly defender.
Tuesday's conference honors are the third and fourth weekly awards earned by CBU this season. Freshman Ulrik Stroem has twice been named the conference's Newcomer of the Week.
The Lancers will continue the Pac-12 season on Wednesday when Oregon State visits the CBU Soccer Stadium. Wednesday's meeting with the Beavers can be viewed nationally on ESPNU. The match also kicks off a stretch where the Lancers will play three out of four matches at home, including the Crosstown Showdown with UC Riverside on Saturday.
