RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's volleyball team will continue its early conference homestand this week as they host Cal State Bakersfield and CSUN in Van Dyne Gym.
The Lancers are still looking for their first win in conference action after dropping a pair of close matches at home last week to UCSD and UC Irvine in Riverside. CBU currently sits at 3-12 overall and 0-4 in Big West action.
The first game of the week will be a Friday night matchup against the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners. The Roadrunners are a familiar matchup for the Lancers after they spent three seasons as WAC members from 2018 to 2020. CBU is 4-3 against the Runners all-time and has not lost to them in Riverside since October of 1997. During their time as conference rivals, the Lancers went 4-0 against Bakersfield; CSUB got the better of the Lancers in the most recent matchup at a neutral site in Pullman, Washington, in 2022. The Roadrunners are currently 1-3 in conference action with a sweep of Cal State Fullerton and losses to the top side of the conference in Long Beach, UCSB, and Cal Poly.
The final game of the weekend will be on Saturday night against CSUN. The Matadors sit in the middle of the pack in the Big West at 2-2, but have won their previous matchups with a sweep of Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State at home. CSUN is still looking for its first true road win as they currently sit at 0-5, while the Lancers will be looking for their home win at 0-5. This will be the fourth all-time meeting between the Lancers and Matadors and the first ever in Riverside. CSUN has the slight edge in the series at 2-1 with wins in the two most recent meetings in Northridge. CSUN, like the Lancers, will lean on its blocking prowess. The Matadors are the only team better than the Lancers on the blocks, as they rank 9th in the NCAA in blocks per set and 13th in total blocks.
As mentioned, the Lancers will rely on their blocking game this weekend. CBU is second in the conference in total blocks and blocks per game and ranks 34th and 57th nationally in those categories, respectively. The Lancers have gotten tremendous production from their middles and outsides on the blocks and have four players with at least 30 blocks this season. Daria Chekhovskikh leads the way with 39, while Bella Breuer and Filippa Botcher have combined for 66 blocks in limited appearances.
