RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team will look to continue to distance itself from the rest of the conference as it continues WAC play this week at home against Southern Utah and Utah Tech.
The Lancers enter the week in sole possession of first place in the standings following a critical road win at Abilene Christian to get to 10-1. CBU is two games ahead of the Wildcats in the standings with seven games to go, but will have four of those seven in Riverside.
The week for CBU begins on Thursday evening, as they host the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, who are 7-4 and in third place in the WAC standings. The last matchup with the Thunderbirds was on January 10 in Cedar City, when the Lancers bested the Thunderbirds in an overtime thriller, 82-77, to give SUU their only home loss of the season to date. Lauren Olsen scored the game-tying layup with just under a second to play and then would score nine of CBU's 13 points in the overtime period to win the game. The Thunderbirds have struggled on the road in conference games this season, posting a 2-3 record.
This game will be just the third all-time meeting in Riverside between the two teams and the eighth overall. CBU is 4-3 in the all-time series and has won four of the previous five meetings. Southern Utah sits three full games back of the Lancers in the standings and will look to gain some ground in the matchup. A matchup to watch will be the battle for the boards with both the Lancers and Thunderbirds ranked in the top 20 in rebounding in the country this season. SUU is in the top 15 in rebound margin, total rebounding, and defensive rebounding per game, while the Lancers are 5th in the NCAA in defensive rebounding and top 25 in total rebounding.
The final matchup of the week will be a home contest with Utah Tech on Valentine's Day. This will be the final of three total contests this season with the Trailblazers, with the Lancers besting UTU on the road in the previous two matchups. CBU defeated Utah Tech by an average of seven points in the two road wins, with the last win coming 67-61 on January 22. The Trailblazers find themselves at the bottom of the conference standings at 1-10 and are currently on a seven-game skid. Utah Tech's last win came in early January at home to Utah Valley. Overall, the Lancers have won eight straight games against Utah Tech, with their last loss coming in February of 2022. The Trailblazers will have a road date with Utah Valley before making the trip to Riverside for the Saturday afternoon matchup.
