RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team dropped just its second conference game of the season as the Southern Utah Thunderbirds came into Riverside and pulled out the 85-70 victory.
The loss is only the second of the calendar year for the Lancers and drops them to 10-2 in the Western Athletic Conference standings, while the Thunderbirds pull within two games of CBU in third place at 8-4. The Lancers still maintain a one-game lead in the standings over Abilene Christian as they remain atop the conference through 12 games of action.
Southern Utah's offense was the story of the evening, and it got going early with a quick 11-2 start behind three early triples. CBU's fast-paced offense got them back in the game in a hurry, pulling within one possession just moments later, but the Thunderbirds' offense would not quiet down, and they would lead 22-17 after the first quarter of play. The Thunderbirds' best offensive quarter came in the second as they would shoot 56% from the floor while outscoring the Lancers by nine to take a commanding 46-32 lead into halftime.
The Lancers attempted to mount a comeback in the third period, overcoming a tough start to finish the period on an 8-2 run, cutting the deficit to 11 points. Despite its best efforts, the Lancers could not slash the lead below double-digits in the fourth period as the Thunderbirds continued to answer CBU's runs with shots of their own. The Thunderbirds would finalize the victory 85-70 as the final horn sounded.
Lauren Olsen would lead the scoring for the Lancers with 16 points on seven made field goals, while Khloe Lemon and Shawnee Nordstrom each contributed 15 points on seven made field goals. Emma Johansson continued to add to her NCAA-leading shot block totals with five more in this game and would score 13 points on 60% shooting on the offensive end.
Southern Utah outshot the Lancers 53% to 43% on the night and would outscore CBU by 15 from the perimeter. CBU would dominate the paint battle, outscoring the Thunderbirds 52-38, but SUU would prove to be the more aggressive team tonight with 15 free-throw attempts to just two for the Lancers.
NEXT: The Lancers will continue their homestand on Saturday, February 14, against Utah Tech at 1 PM PT.
