TULSA, OK--- The California Baptist University wrestling team closed day one of the BIG 12 Wrestling Championships with three guaranteed placers on Friday at the BOK Center.
Gabe Schumm, Tristan Kemp, and Drayden Morton all advanced to day two of the tournament with multiple wins in the consolation bracket and have earned spots in the seventh-place matches of their respective weight classes following the opening day of wrestling in Tulsa.
In the opening session, the Lancers would have a handful of close calls in the champions bracket, including a down-to-the-wire rematch between 2x NCAA Qualifier Jordan Titus facing Jesse Vasquez at 141lbs. Vasquez led early with multiple takedowns, but Titus would respond as the two put up plenty of offense in their match. Titus would secure the final takedown just before time expired in the third period to ultimately send Vasquez to wrestlebacks.
The Lancers would pick up their first victory of the day in wrestlebacks as Remy Murillo would dominate Gavin Caprella of Air Force 12-3 to stamp his ticket to the next session. Vasquez would join him in the ensuing match as he would defeat Michael Olson of North Dakota State via decision 7-2. The Lancers would have an incredible string of victories to complete the opening session, as they would get match victories at nearly every weight class in the opening round of wrestlebacks to close the session. CBU would secure nine of its ten wrestler spots in the evening session with Kelly, Schumm, Morton, Espinoza, Alonso, Sheeren, and Kemp all picking up wins or securing byes to advance to the next session.
In the second session, Murillo would get tech falled by #4 Gunner Andrick to begin the session, while Vasquez and Kelly would come up just short in their respective matches to end their runs in Tulsa. Schumm would be the first victor of the round with an 8-7 nailbiter over Logan Fowler of Air Force to secure his placement in the bracket and guarantee him a spot in session three tomorrow afternoon. Schumm would come up just short of advancing in the bracket, falling to Sloan Swann of Wyoming 4-3.
David Alonso would fall one takedown short of a trip to Cleveland at 184lbs as the redshirt freshman took #8 Aiden Brenot of North Dakota State to the wire in wrestlebacks. Alonso came up on the wrong side of a sudden-victory scramble, as Brenot would advance and secure an NCAA-qualifying spot. The same would be the case for Eli Sheeren as he would come up short to Devin Wasley of North Dakota State at 197lbs in an 8-0 major decision. Tristan Kemp would advance to the next round via a forfeit to secure his day two advancement, but would not be able to advance any further after losing to #7 Jarrett Stoner of Missouri.
Overall, the Lancers will have three guaranteed placers for the tournament, which would be the most in program history for CBU.
NEXT: Morton, Schumm, and Kemp will all compete in Session III on Saturday, March 7, in seventh-place matches at the BOK Center beginning at 10 AM PT.
