TULSA, OK--- The California Baptist University wrestling team finalized its season on Saturday afternoon as three Lancers earned placement at the BIG 12 Championships in Tulsa, OK.
The day began with Drayden Morton facing off against #8 Jared Hill of Wyoming in a rematch from the dual in mid-November in Riverside. Morton defeated Hill in the dual matchup when Hill was ranked #16 in the nation. Morton would make it two wins this season over the 3x NCAA qualifier, defeating Hill 4-2 in a decision. Morton's first-period takedown would be the difference in the win and would give Morton the Seventh Place Title and the first BIG 12 placement of his career.
Gabe Schumm would come up next at 165lbs as he would face Peyten Kellar of Oklahoma in the Seventh Place Match. Kellar ended the season ranked #31 nationally but came into the tournament unseeded. Schumm took control early in the match with a quick takedown and would get six back points for the early 11-2 lead in the first period. Kellar would make up some ground in the next two periods with two takedowns to cut the deficit to just three points. Schumm would fend off the comeback attempt with a reversal in the third period to secure the 14-9 decision over Kellar and the 7th Place Title.
Tristan Kemp would finalize the day for the Lancers at heavyweight as he squared off with Rylan Kuhn of Air Force in the Seventh Place Match. Kuhn would control the match from start to finish and would defeat Kemp 9-2 for a decision win. Despite the loss, Kemp would make the podium at heavyweight, finishing 8th.
The Lancers would finish with 21.5 team points, placing 13th out of 14 teams, and set a program record with three placers.
