NASHVILLE, TN --- The champions of collegiate STUNT still reside in Riverside. Squaring off with Kentucky in the national championship game for the fourth year in a row, the Lancers continued their unbeaten streak as a 27-22 final brings a sixth-consecutive national title to Southern California.
Head coach Brandon Seagondollar and the Lancers are now 140-0 all-time, extending the longest win streak in college sports history.
The rematch with Kentucky was set up early on Sunday, as the Wildcats squared off with Cal Poly in a game to determine who would face CBU. The Lancers punched their ticket to the finals on Saturday with wins over Missouri State and Kentucky. A 20-12 win for the Wildcats ended Cal Poly's season and set the stage for another CBU-Kentucky clash.
Sunday's meeting was the third of the season between the Lancers and Wildcats, and the five-point margin was the closest in those three contests. Sunday's five point victory is the second narrowest scoreline in this rivalry, with last season's 17-13 championship clash being the closest battle.
CBU secured the championship win by grabbing two ties off routine five in the fourth quarter, bringing the game to an end one routine early. Kentucky needed to pull off six unanswered points in the final two routines to force overtime.
Layla Langrell was recognized after the game as the Division I STUNT MVP. Savannah Eshleman was named the Player of the Game.
The Lancers are one of three champions crowned on Sunday in Nashville. The day also saw Oklahoma Baptist top Jessup, 30-29, in the Division II championship, and George Fox claim a 25-20 win over Muskingum in the Division II clash.
