CBU improves to 1-0 for the second straight year, while the Cougars, who are in their first year as a varsity program, drop to 0-1.
Diaz was a thorn in the Cougars' side all afternoon as he also assisted on the Lancers' other 2 tallies. However, his strike in the 92nd minute, proved to be the game-winner.
The Lancers struck early when Fashinu-Ron Nesbeth took a ball from Diaz and cracked it from 35 yards out past CSUSM keeper Trent Painter and into the upper-90 to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. That score stood heading into the intermission.
“Anybody who knows Fashinu knows the kid is full of potential,” said California Baptist head coach Shayon Jalayer. “This was a great start for him, and that was an absolutely brilliant goal.”
However, just 4 minutes out of halftime, the Cougars got an equalizer when Ben Crouse headed home a throw in from Troy Skomra in the 49th minute.
In the 75th minute, Ruiz-Esparza scored his first career goal to make it 2-1. Diaz gathered the ball on the right side of the box and sent it to the top of the box to a waiting Ruiz-Esparza, who one-timed a bullet to the far post. Yet, just 3 minutes later, the Cougars tied it again when Bradley Seidenglanz was on the receiving end of a free kick and had nothing but net in front of him.
“I couldn't be more pleased with the result,” said Jalayer. “We are so young, and it showed for about 20 minutes in the second half when they scored their 2 goals, but we regrouped and regained our composure.”
The Lancers outshot the Cougars, 13-9, including 3-1 in the overtime periods.
