RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? California Baptist University continued to mow its way through Golden State Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 (30-19, 30-26, 30-21) win over Azusa Pacific University Thursday night. The Lancers (20-3, 13-2 GSAC) downed their second straight top 10 opponent in just three games with the win over the eighth-ranked Cougars (17-8, 8-7 GSAC).
Shi Fei had a season-high 20 kills while Verania Willis recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs. Willis needed seven more kills than teammate Yudelka Bonilla to pass her on the all-time kills list. Bonilla recorded eight kills as both seniors stand atop the career kills list at 1,603. Bonilla also moved up on the career digs list as she tied Linsey Smolskis' school record of 1,704 digs with 10 digs on the night. Bonilla also tied a season-high with four aces.
“I thought Fei was on fire tonight,” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “She was good all around. She passed well, she was digging balls, she had some good tough serves and was blocking balls.”
Colleen Sweeney hit a career-high three aces and also had seven kills. Kayla Van Duyn had 35 assists while Caitlin Parker had 10. Katrina Clark had a match-high 24 digs while Rachel Gowen had a team-high three blocks.
“I thought we were a little sub-par defensively, but Fei kept us going and Kat stayed really steady tonight,” said McGuyre. “Vera has responded well since the Fresno match, but we still need our middles to get back in the match. I thought our first options worked well tonight. We weren't pushed to any of our back up options.”
In the opening game, CBU led 19-16 before it finished out the game with an 11-3 run. Sweeney had two kills in the run. In game two, the Lancers fell behind the Cougars 7-3, but CBU got behind two kills from Fei and single kills by Willis and Sweeney to score a 10-2 run to take a 13-9 lead.
In the final game, CBU never trailed as Fei led the way with seven kills hitting .545 in the final game (7-1-11).
CBU returns to Van Dyne Gymnasium Saturday when it hosts Westmont at 3 p.m.
