RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? There's only one more road game left after California Baptist put away Point Loma Nazarene for the second time this year with a 3-0 (30-25, 30-19, 30-28) win. The Lancers (22-3, 15-2 GSAC) ripped off their fifth straight 3-0 sweep with the victory over the Sea Lions (15-11, 7-10 GSAC).
Verania Willis and Yudelka Bonilla led the way as both seniors finished with a double-double. Willis finished with 19 kills while Bonilla recorded 17. Willis notched 17 digs and Bonilla had 15. Bonilla hit a match-high .469 (17-2-32).
Shi Fei matched the two veterans with 16 kills of her own and was just one dig away from a double-double with nine. Kayla Van Duyn along with Fei was just one dig shy of a double-double and also led the team in assists with a match-high 49. Katrina Clark had a team-high 18 digs while Gowen had a match-high five blocks.
As a team, the Lancers hit .301 (60-16-146) and had eight blocks.
The Lancers got seven kills from Willis in the opening game as they battled back from being down 5-1. CBU tied the game at nine before going on a 9-2 run to take an 18-11 lead on the way to taking a 1-0 match lead. The Lancers broke a 6-6 tie with an 8-1 run including three kills from Bonilla to take the lead at 14-7. That run gave CBU the needed boost to close out the game at 30-19. In the final game, the Lancers staved off a late run when the Sea Lions got within one at 29-28, but Willis got the kill to end the match.
The Lancers still need two more wins to lock up second place in the GSAC and will attempt to do that with back-to-back home matches against San Diego Christian, Saturday, at 5 p.m. and Vanguard, Tuesday, at 7 p.m.
