THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. --- What a difference a few days make. Just two days removed from its impressive tie with NCAA Division II No. 11-ranked Cal State L.A., California Baptist imploded in a matter of minutes Tuesday, falling, 4-0, to NCAA Division III Cal Lutheran.
The loss is the Lancers' first of the season as they fall to 2-1-1 and also have their eight game unbeaten streak snapped. The Kingsmen, which returned 15 players from last year's conference runner-up squad, improve to 1-0.
CLU wasted little time getting on the board, finding the back of the net in the seventh minute. The Kingsmen never looked back. While the Lancers kept pace through the remainder of the half, they were never able to get the equalizer.
Then, in a matter of four minutes midway through the second half and his team trailing by just a goal, All-GSAC sophomore Spenser Steele received a pair of yellow cards and was sent off in the 69th minute. That's when the floodgates opened.
Playing with a man advantage and utilizing the open space, the Kingsmen scored three goals in less than 13 minutes, getting the first one just seven minutes after the red card and the final one in the 89th minute.
Cal Lutheran out-shot the Lancers, 15-10, limiting the Lancers to just three first half shots. It is the second straight game the Lancers failed to score as their scoreless streak now spans nearly 213 minutes.
