SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- California Baptist couldn't overcome a two-goal deficit Monday and as a result fell 2-1 to NAIA Region II-member Dominican in a non-conference match in San Rafael, Calif.
The loss is the Lancers' second straight as they fall to 2-2-1 overall. The Penguins are now 1-4.
Dominican, which has suffered hefty defeats to GSAC opponents Westmont (2-0), Azusa Pacific (7-0) and Biola (3-0) already, scored its first goal of the season in the 27th minute when Shane Huiberts put the Penguins ahead 1-0. That score stood through halftime, and then just three minutes into the second half, Huiberts did it again, giving the Penguins what would turn out to be a much-needed insurance tally.
Christian Diaz cut the deficit in half with a goal in the 55th minute, but the Lancers, who were playing with the services of an All-GSAC honoree for the second time in the past three games, couldn't find the equalizer.
The Lancers out-shot the Penguins, 16-11, including a 7-3 margin on goal. CBU also had a whopping 10 corner kicks.
In their past two losses since starting the season 2-0-1, the Lancers have been outscored, 6-1. CBU played without All-GSAC sophomore Spenser Steele, who was serving a red card suspension. All-GSAC midfielder Federico Cino sat out the scoreless draw with NCAA Division II No. 11-ranked Cal State L.A. (Sept. 1) with a red card as well.
The Lancers conclude their Northern California swing when they travel to Rocklin, Calif., to take on William Jessup Tuesday.
