SANTA CLARITA, Calif. ? The road trip for California Baptist University rolled on into Golden State Athletic Conference play Tuesday as the Lancers took down The Master's College 3-0 (30-26, 30-23, 30-20). The Lancers (7-1, 1-0) captured their seventh straight victory over the Mustangs (3-2, 0-1) and their fifth straight overall.
Verania Willis led the match in kills, with 18, hitting .371 while Yudelka Bonilla and Angela Willis were both in double-figure kills with 12 and 11. As a team, CBU collected 57 kills. Kayla Van Duyn recorded 40 of the team's 54 assists. Angela Willis also served four aces. Katrina Clark dug out a match high 17 attacks while Verania Willis notched 13 digs. CBU blocked six attempts with each Willis, Van Duyn and Colleen Sweeney all getting a pair of blocks.
“Katrina did a great job defensively tonight,” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “Anytime you're over five digs a game you're doing really well. We ran a balanced offense tonight. We were still mediocre with our blocking. It has been better than what it has been, but it's still not where we should be.”
The Lancers took an early 5-1 lead in game one and took their biggest lead on a 6-1 run to break a 14-all tie and take a 20-15 lead. The Mustangs almost matched CBU point-for-point down the stretch of game one, but the Lancers held on to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second game CBU used a 5-1 run to break a 13-13 tie and never lost control pushing its lead to 27-19 before closing out the game. The final game was never in doubt as the Lancers stormed to a 5-0 and then an 8-1 lead before taking their biggest lead of the game at 25-12 on an ace by Angela Willis .
“I thought we were strong defensively in game one,” said McGuyre. “I just thought we struggled a little bit offensively. It flipped around in game two and we got back on track offensively, but we didn't play well on defense. We finally put it together in game three.”
Cal Baptist will now prepare for its home opener against the defending NAIA National Runners-Up Fresno Pacific. The third ranked Lancers will take on the second ranked Sunbirds Saturday at 7 p.m. inside of Van Dyne Gymnasium.
