CLAREMONT, Calif. ? Coming off two big wins over NCAA Division I schools yesterday, California Baptist lost for the first time in school history to Chapman, but ended the day with a win over Mercyhurst.
The Lancers (19-7) had won all 14 meetings with the Panthers since the series started in 2000 until Chapman stole an 11-8 win at the Claremont Convergence. CBU rebounded from that loss with a 13-6 victory over the Lakers.
California Baptist outscored the Panthers in the first half 6-5, but only two second half goals spelled the demise for the Lancers. Chapman held an 8-7 lead after the third and pulled away from CBU in the fourth.
Chris Morgan scored half of the Lancers goals with four while Jeff Woolstenhulme, Aaron Steiger, Alan Ogden and Brent Troutman all scored once.
Steiger and Morgan combined for seven goals in the come-from-behind win against Mercyhurst. Trailing 4-2 at the end of the first quarter, CBU stormed back with six second-quarter goals, and held the Lakers to just one, to take a 7-5 lead at the half.
The Lancers blanked the Lakers in the third, 4-0, and added an insurance goal in the fourth.
Outside of Steiger's four goals and Morgan's three, six other Lancers scored single goals. Chris Gwinn, Kellan Frericks, Ogden, Norbert Karoly, Chris Toy and Peter Hines all found the back of net.
Zach Bowman also posted 15 saves on the day.
The Lancers will now close out the Claremont Convergence tomorrow with games against UC Santa Cruz (11:30 a.m.) and Cal Lutheran (3:15 p.m.).
