AZUSA, Calif. ? California Baptist had two match points, but couldn't hold off Azusa Pacific in a 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 18-25, 18-16) thriller in the Felix Event Center, Thursday night.
The fourth-ranked Lancers (20-7, 9-6 GSAC) fall to fifth place in the Golden State Athletic Conference as the ninth-ranked Cougars (20-8, 10-6 GSAC) jump over CBU into fourth.
Despite outscoring APU in total points scored, it was 17 service errors by the Lancers, compared to just 10 by the Cougars, that made all the difference.
CBU outhit the Cougars .299 to .274 and got a career-high 29 kills from Fei Shi who hit .433 on the night. The Lancers also had nine blocks to Azusa's six, but the Cougars posted a .905 service percentage while CBU recorded an .845.
It was a match-up of two of the biggest hitters in the conference as Shi went head-to-head with APU's Jill Baker who also ripped 25 kills and hit .339.
Noelle Dyk was the only other Lancer with double-figure kills with 16 while Mical Bell dished out a career-high 40 assists. CBU also got five blocks from Bree Rauschenbach who also ripped a season-high eight kills.
The Lancers led just once in the opening set, but never trailed by more than four. Trailing 18-14, the Lancers got within one for the last time at 20-19 on a Colleen Sweeney kill. The Cougars answered scoring the next three to take a 23-19 lead and eventually took the set.
California Baptist controlled the second set after going on a 7-2 run to go up 9-4. CBU took its biggest lead of the set at 18-12 on a Dyk kill, but the Cougars rallied with a 7-2 run to get within one at 20-19. Shi answered for the Lancers scoring three of the Lancers' final five points in a 5-1 run to close out the set.
The third set saw 10 ties before consecutive errors by CBU gave Azusa Pacific an 18-16 lead. The Cougars pushed it to 22-17 before the Lancers got three straight kills from Shi, Rauschenbach and Sweeney to pull the APU lead back to 22-20. That was as close as CBU came as the two traded point-for-point to close out the set.
CBU led from start to finish in the fourth set and broke it open with a 7-1 run to take a 19-11 lead. APU cut its deficit to 21-17, but the Lancers were able to tie the match at two sets apiece after they closed out the set with a 4-1 run.
In the final set, CBU trailed 6-2 before going on a 4-0 run that included a pair of kills from Shi to tie it at 6-6. Then trailing again at 10-9, the Lancers tied the set on a Shi kill and took advantage of two APU errors to take a 12-10 lead. CBU had match point twice at 14-13 and 15-16, but the Cougars scored the final three points to take the match.
CBU doesn't have much down time as it has to turn around Saturday and travel to Santa Barbara, Calif., to take on Westmont at 7 p.m.
