SANTA BARBARA, Calif. ? Fei Shi recorded the highest hitting percentage in conference play this season at .519 (14-0-27) in leading No. 4 California Baptist to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-20) win over Westmont.
As a team the Lancers (21-7, 10-6 GSAC) hit .353 (37-7-85) and out blocked (7.5-0) and out aced (9-2) the Warriors (9-18, 3-13 GSAC) in the win.
Shi was the only Lancer with double figure kills while Mical Bell was the only other Lancer to be in double figures with 18 assists. Colleen Sweeney chipped in seven kills and hit .357. Sweeney also served up a pair of aces while Bell and Chole Ainsworth also served two aces.
Nine different Lancers posted a dig as Katrina Clark notched a team-high nine while Shi had seven. Sweeney, Shi, Bree Rauschenbach and Carolina Flete all posted a pair of blocks.
The one set that the Lancers didn't hit over .300 was the set that they won by the most. California Baptist hit .394 and .393 in the first and last set and hit just .250 in the second, but won the second set by 11.
CBU trailed just three times the entire match with the first coming at 1-0 in the opening set. CBU trailed 5-2 before an 8-2 run gave the Lancers a 10-7 lead. Leading 14-10, CBU used an 8-3 run to take its biggest lead of the set at 22-13 before taking a 1-0 match lead.
Tied at 2-2 early in the second set, the Lancers went on a 7-2 run and led 11-6 before the Warriors called a timeout. The timeout didn't help Westmont as CBU proceeded to score five the next six points and took a 16-7 lead and forced another Warrior timeout. After the second timeout, Shi smashed consecutive kills to complete an 8-1 run to take an 18-8 lead. The Lancers took their biggest lead of the set at 24 -11 to set up set point, but the Warriors answered with three straight to make it 24-14. CBU took the set and a 2-0 match lead on a Westmont error.
CBU trailed 5-4 in the final set before a Flete kill and followed that up with an ace to give the Lancers the lead for good at 6-5. The Lancers didn't lead by more than five until three straight kills from Shi, Sweeney and Jessica Ewoldt gave the Lancers their biggest lead at 24-18 before Sweeney closed out the match with a kill.
After spending two games on the road, California Baptist will now head back home to host Point Loma Nazarene, Tuesday, for a 7 p.m. GSAC contest.
