FULLERTON, Calif. --- Despite generating 23 shots, a frustrated California Baptist University couldn't crack a packed in Hope International defense and was forced to settle for a scoreless tie Wednesday afternoon.
The tie moves the Lancers to 5-3-2 overall, 1-1-1 (4 points) GSAC, and it snaps a five-game winning streak for the Lancers over the Royals. In fact, it is just the third time in 25 games the Lancers didn't come away with a victory over HIU.
The Royals move to 7-2-2, 1-2-1 (4 points).
"Sure it's frustrating," said first-year Head Coach Ryan Jorden. " I'm pleased with the guys and the effort they put forth today, and the bright side is that it's not a loss. To be able to come away with three points instead of one from this one would have been much better, obviously. We've got a few days now to continue to work on some things, get better and take our shot at Azusa Pacific (on Saturday)."
From the opening kickoff, it was apparent that the Royals committed to defending. The Lancers out-shot the Royals, 7-1, in the opening half and had all seven shots in overtime. Yet, they could never find the back of the net.
The Lancers out-shot the Royals, 23-5, on the day. HIU keeper Matt Fike made eight saves, seven of them after the first half. CBU keeper Jeff Redinger collected a pair of saves in getting his third shutout of the season.
CBU returns to action Saturday when it hosts the NAIA's No. 9 Azusa Pacific at 1 p.m.
