Overtime Goal Ends CBU’s WAC Era

RIVERSIDE --- Nearly 700 fans filed into the CBU Soccer Stadium on Wednesday night to see two teams fight for a spot in the WAC Championship Match. Overtime was needed to decide a winner between CBU and San Jose State, and in the first extra period, the ball bounced in favor of the Spartans, who saw their season advance with a 3-2 win.
The Lancers see their record drop to 10-4-3. With an outside chance still possible for an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament, CBU now must wait to see if Wednesday was indeed the end.
"I'm proud of the team," head coach Coe Michaelson said after the match. "Tonight was a very high level game, a great display of what college soccer can be with two top teams. The level of this game really shows how unfortunate the draw was, that this was the semi, rather than the final. With that said, I think we did enough to win it in the second half and created the chances to win it, but that's the game sometimes when the margins are this fine. In the end Simon has a fantastic team that is giving everything for him in his last year."
It was the Lancers who scored first on Wednesday, a potential goal of the year candidate play as Adolfo Pino's midair volley placed his side on top in the 33rd minute. Stavros Charalampous, the WAC Defensive Player of the Year, flicked a back-heel pass to Pino, who sent the ball home.
If Wednesday is Pino's final game, he puts a storybook ending on his career. Pino began his collegiate career with a goal in his first game, and now, potentially, a goal in his last.
SJSU leveled the match off a corner kick in the 43rd minute and then took the lead with a free kick goal in the 70th.
Down on the scoreboard with 20 minutes to play, CBU circled up before the kickoff and reenergized one another. With backs against the wall, the Lancers responded with fight, as the leveling tally came within two minutes.
On a breakaway chance set up by a long throw from Hugo Do Rego, Blake D'Agostino slotted the ball to Liam Jones, who converted his fifth goal of the season.
Many chances followed, with Do Rego making multiple key saves, and the Lancers coming close on their attacking end as well. A drive into the penalty area from Felix Ezekwuka looked to be the chance CBU needed as he was taken to the ground. No foul was called, and after VAR was assessed, the call of no penalty remained.
Deadlocked at two after 90 minutes, the two teams marched into extra time.
Two-and-a-half minutes into the extra period, SJSU scored the winning goal. The first shot from the Spartans was blocked, but the rebound found Arnold Matshazi, who netted the winning goal to send his team to the championship match against Grand Canyon.
The 2025 season was one to remember for CBU fans. For the first time in program history, the Lancers became a nationally ranked team. CBU also earned its highest RPI ranking in program history when they jumped to No. 25. The Lancers received votes in eight out of 12 United Soccer Coaches' Polls, and they added the cherry on top by winning the first WAC Regular Season Championship in program history.
What comes next is the hope that CBU's name will be called Monday morning during the NCAA Selection Show. If not, next up for the CBU will be the Big West Conference.
