Durham Trip Ends in 3-1 Loss to Duke

DURHAM, N.C. --- California Baptist's second and final match of their season-opening trip to North Carolina saw the Lancers face the hosts of this week's action, the Duke Blue Devils. After a level first half, Duke responded with a pair of second-half goals to send CBU back to Southern California with a 3-1 defeat.
The Lancers finished 1-1 in Duke's John Rennie Invitational. CBU opened the season with a 2-0 victory over Campbell University on Thursday.
Freshman Justin Ojo netted the Lancers' lone goal of the day, an unassisted strike in the 25th minute. On an attempted pass back to Duke goalkeeper Max Deisenhofer, Ojo stole the ball away, setting up an open look on frame that leveled the match at one.
The goal was the first of Ojo's collegiate career.
Sunday's match entered the halftime intermission with the scoreboard deadlocked at one. Duke responded to the level score with a go-ahead tally off the foot of Ethan Congelton in the 54th minute. Eight minutes later, Logan Moniz netted the third Blue Devil goal of the afternoon, pushing Duke's advantage to two.
"Unfortunately, we got a bit sloppy second half which led to a very start, stop game with lots of set pieces that I don't think suits us," said head coach Coe Michaelson. "We know we have to pass the ball better and show our quality."
Two Lancers made their collegiate debuts in Sunday's match. Goalkeeper Ulrick Stroem played all 90 minutes, finishing with two saves against three goals allowed. Adam Marsli also debuted and played 53 minutes in reserve.
CBU and Duke ended Sunday's match level in the shot column with nine per side. The Blue Devils recorded five attempts on frame, opposed to four from the Lancers.
Duke won the possession battle at 53 percent.
The Lancers will return to Riverside on Monday and will take a week off from game action following a week in North Carolina. CBU's next match will be on Monday, August 31, when the Lancers welcome Denver to the CBU Soccer Stadium. Denver will be the second of three consecutive matches for CBU against teams either ranked or receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
Michaelson spoke about the difficult schedule CBU is battling, adding, "We know that coming on the road against a top team is never going to be easy. Whether you win or lose, however, there is growth opportunity. So we will go home, learn, grow, and be ready for our home opener."
CBU's home opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets for next Monday's match are on sale HERE.
