COSTA MESA, Calif. ? California Baptist is now a step closer to reaching an automatic trip to Sioux City, Iowa and the NAIA National Tournament after a 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-21, 25-19) win over No. 17 Vanguard.
Carolina Flete filled a void left with no Fei Shi as the freshman ripped a season-high 11 kills, hit .389 and added a trio of blocks on the night. Noelle Dyk notched her eighth double-double of the year with 15 kills and a match-high 12 digs. Katrina Clark tied Dyk with 12 digs.
“Carolina has come on really strong in our last two matches,” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “She was definitely the key factor in the win tonight. She came in late at the start of the year so she was a little behind. It really just came down to her and the setters getting their timing down. Now she's really starting to be a big part of this offense.”
Mical Bell dished out a team-high 27 assists while Krista Hasemeyer added 12. The Lancers also got six blocks from Bree Rauschenbach while Dyk and Colleen Sweeney each had four. Rauschenbach, Bell and Kari Oliver all served a pair of aces.
Despite hitting just .157, the Lancers were able to complete the season sweep with their defense as CBU out blocked (10-8) and out dug (48-42) the Lions.
The Lancers trailed 6-3 in the opening set, but used a 6-3 run to take a 10-9 lead. CBU trailed again at 12-11, but rebounded with a 6-1 run to take a 17-13 advantage. The Lancers never led by more than four, but Vanguard could only get as close as two on two occasions including the last at 24-22. The Lancers got set point at 24-20 before the Lions got back-to-back points to force a CBU time out. Flete responded with a kill to give CBU the set and a 1-0 match lead.
Vanguard answered with a late run in the second set to tie the match at 1-1. The Lions led 20-17 after CBU cut its deficit to three on an Oliver ace and a Sweeney kill, but Vanguard took advantage of four CBU errors and a kill by Michal Shortridge to finish the set off with a 5-2 run.
The Lancers closed out the third set with a 9-4 run after trailing 17-16. CBU got a pair of kills each from Flete and Jessica Ewoldt in the late run.
In the fourth set, the Lancers trailed 19-16, but CBU answered scoring the final nine points of the set to take the match. California Baptist got seven of the final nine points off of Vanguard errors and picked up the other two off of a kill each from Dyk and Rauschenbach.
California Baptist will now close out the regular season, Saturday, when it hosts No. 2 Biola at 7 p.m.
“We have been hitting our stride lately, but this will be a big test to see if we're ready for the postseason,” said McGuyre. “We really need to play well and try to carry some confidence into the national tournament.”
