RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? On a night set just for her, senior Katrina Clark made every moment count as the senior set a school record with 36 digs in a 3-2 (25-22, 25-20, 10-25, 22-25, 15-13) loss to No. 2 Biola.
Clark, who was playing her final game inside Van Dyne Gym, broke Yudelka Bonilla's mark of 35 digs set back in 2005. Clark's previous season high came back in last year's national title match when she posted 28 digs against Fresno Pacific.
The Lancers (24-8, 13-7) trailed two sets to none, before blowing out the Eagles in the third set and held on in the fourth to force a fifth set. In the fifth set the Lancers led 13-12 before Biola scored the final three points to take the win.
Fei Shi and Noelle Dyk led the way for California Baptist as Shi ripped a game-high 19 kills while Dyk had 13. Shi notched her ninth double-double as she added 12 digs. She also posted five blocks.
Krista Hasemeyer and Mical Bell split the setting duties as Hasemeyer dished out a team-high 26 assists while Bell had 20.
In the opening game Biola jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Lancers rallied to tie the set at 7-7. The Eagles then broke an 8-8 tie with a 9-3 run to take a 17-11 lead. Biola took its biggest lead of the set at 22-14, but CBU answered with a 5-1 run to get its deficit down to 23-19. The Eagles stopped the run with a kill from Kristen Peterson to get to set point at 24-19. CBU scored three straight on a Shi kill and two Biola errors to get within two at 24-22, but Peterson closed it out with a kill to give Biola a 1-0 match lead.
Biola broke open the second set with a 7-0 run that snapped a 9-9 tie and gave the Eagles at 16-9. CBU cut it to 22-19, but the Eagles got a kill from Kelsey Christoferson and two Lancer errors to take the set.
CBU took its first lead of the match in the third set at 1-0 and climbed out to a 9-7 lead before closing the set with a 16-3 run to take its first set of the night.
The Lancers carried the momentum from the third set into the fourth set as they jumped out a 6-1 lead. Of those first six points, four of them came off of kills from Jessica Kalama. Leading 13-6, CBU watched BU go on a 4-0 run to get within three at 13-10. CBU then climbed out to an 18-13 lead, but the Eagles answered again with a 5-2 run to get within two at 20-18. The Lancers held on in the final few points to tie the match at 2-2.
In the final set, California Baptist trailed 5-3 before it used an 8-3 run to take an 11-8 lead. The Eagles answered with a 4-1 run to tie the game at 12, but the Lancers took lead again at 13-12 on a BU service error. That was the last point CBU scored as the Eagles got a pair of kills from Meghan Warkentin and a kill from Jessica Buffum to grab the final three points and the match.
California Baptist will now prepare for the NAIA National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa, Dec. 2-6.
