COSTA MESA, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 20-ranked California Baptist was ignited by a quick win from Andrew Meister, and the Lancers rode that momentum to a thrilling and stunning, 7-2, GSAC win over No. 10 Vanguard Tuesday afternoon.
The win is easily the Lancers' biggest win since being reinstated as a varsity program last year. The Lancers finished last season just 5-15 but are already 4-1 this year.
The Lancers won two of three doubles' matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles' play. It was there that Meister quickly rolled past Blake Lambert at No. 6 (7-5, 6-0). What made his win even more impressive was the fact that Meister trailed 5-2 in the opening set and then won the next 11 games to win his first GSAC singles' match.
“Andrew came up huge today and gave us a big lift with his singles' win,” said CBU second-year head coach Chris Taylor, who picks up his first win against his alma mater. “When he walked off the court after his win, the other guys saw that and began to believe that we could win this match. The emotion and enthusiasm was contagious, and everyone of our guys caught it.”
With an emotional win at No. 6 and a 3-1 lead under their belts, the Lancers rolled to four more singles' wins, including a thrilling 4-6, 7-6, 12-10 win by Carlos Cirne-Lima at No. 2, and a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 4 by Moti Eisikovits.
