RIVERSIDE – The California Baptist University track teams only had two opportunities to compete in 2020, but the runners took advantage of those occasions by rearranging the record book.
In total, nine new times were added to the record books as five men and three women etched their names into the 3,000-meter rankings. The top three spots for the women all came in 2020 as Emilie Renaud initially set a new top-mark at the Pomona-Pitzer Collegiate All Comers meet with a time of nine minutes and 36.03 seconds.
That mark was overtaken by Anett Somogyi three weeks later at the RCC Invitational in 9:35.58. Elin Brink was right there with her teammates, setting the third fastest time in school history, in the same race as Somogyi, crossing the line in 9:37.84
The men's side split their record times between same the two meets. At Pomona-Pitzer, Ivo Balabanov set the record with a time of 8:21.15. Florian Le Pallec, running unattached, came in at 8:26.55 for a time that would eventually settle as his second fastest of the season. He would best his own record time at the RCC Invitational, this time running as a CBU athlete, by over three seconds at 8:23.80 for the third fastest time in program history.
Manuel Peris Bruno (8:25.73), Timothy Legemet (8:26.98), and Giedrius Valincius (8:27.40) claimed spots seven, 10, and 12 in the record book.
Coming into the season the team was already light on senior athletes and lost just one runner to graduation, Hector Peralta. Two other runners in their final season of eligibility, Somogyi and Fruzsi Ladanyi, each chose to take advantage of the NCAA and CBU approved additional spring season of eligibility and will return to Riverside to finish their final outdoor season as Lancers.
