RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Tomorrow's new NAIA rankings won't reflect it since the votes were already cast, but it doesn't matter to CBU head coach Chris Taylor and the Lancers.
The No. 7-ranked Lancers won two of three doubles and then split the singles down the middle to defeat No. 6 Concordia, 5-4, in a mild upset Tuesday afternoon in Riverside.
The win gives the Lancers sole possession of third place in the GSAC as they improve to 10-4 overall, 4-2 GSAC. The Eagles drop to 11-4, 3-3.
It is the Lancers' fifth win over a nationally-ranked team and fourth over an NAIA Top 10 team, their third in the past two weeks.
The Lancers nearly swept through doubles, but Chris Nguyen and Daniel Ndlela were able to sneak past Karlis Miljons and Moti Eisikovits, 9-7, to salvage a point. Carlos Cirne-Lima quickly made it 3-1 in favor of the Lancers with a win at No. 2, putting the Lancers in position to need just two wins in the five remaining matches. Patrick Olobo at No. 3 and Miljons at No. 5 got the necessary points with straight set wins. Of the three singles matches the Eagles won, all of them went three games.
