EL CAJON, Calif. --- California Baptist had 12 hits, took advantage of six errors, took an early lead, never trailed and posted a wild 13-7 win at San Diego Christian Wednesday afternoon.
The win is the Lancers' third straight as they improve to 23-12 overall, 12-9 GSAC. The Hawks drop to 13-16, 8-13.
The Lancers did most of their damage with just two swings. Robert Lundy led off the game with his second home run of the season to give CBU a lead it wouldn't lose. Then, with the Lancers leading 4-1 with two outs in the fourth, Levi Garrett smacked his second homer of the season; a three-run shot that gave the Lancers a 7-1 cushion.
San Diego Christian got within 9-6 in the fifth and then 10-7 in the sixth, but the Lancers got RBI singles from J.P. Lapointe in the seventh and Steve Goins and Eddie Quevedo in the ninth to put the game on ice.
Kevin Duke started but struggled with his control, walking five and throwing four wild pitches in going just 4.2 innings. He gave up seven hits and five earned runs in the no-decision. With the Lancers leading 9-6 with two outs in the fifth, Chilly Ronquillo came on in relief and walked Sean West to load the bases but then struck out Hank Lanto to end the threat.
Brandon Peters was 4-for-6 with three runs. Goins was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs. No other Lancer had more than one hit.
Brandon Abell took the loss for SDCC, lasting just 3.2 innings, giving up five hits and five earned runs while walking five.
Both teams combined to use 10 pitchers who gave up a combined 14 walks and six wild pitches. They also combined to leave 21 runners on base.
These two teams will complete their season series tomorrow at Totman Stadium at 3 p.m.
