RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Fei Shi ripped a match-high 15 kills to lead California Baptist to a 3-0 (24-18, 25-23, 25-19) win over Westmont, Tuesday night in a Golden State Athletic Conference contest.
The Lancers (15-1, 4-1 GSAC) won their third straight match of the year and their ninth consecutive match against the Warriors (7-9, 1-4 GSAC).
Fei hit at a .324 clip (15-4-34) and recorded double-figure kills for the 14th time this season. The junior was the only Lancer in double figures in kills as the Lancers hit .283 (44-12-113) as a team. Jessica Kalama ripped a season-high seven kills while hitting .700.
Krista Hasemeyer and Mical Bell tied for the team-high in assist as each dished out 19.
“Mical wants to be on the court and she's doing all the right things,” said McGuyre. “We just have to throw the both of them out there and get them comfortable doing the things we want them to do. It was fun to watch Mical play tonight.”
Noelle Dyk served a season-high three aces while Kari Oliver chipped in a pair of aces as well.
Katrina Clark and Bree Rauschenbach led the defense as Clark had a match-high 13 digs while Rauschenbach had a match-high four blocks. Dyk and Rene Simon also posted a trio of blocks. As a team, CBU notched seven team blocks.
California Baptist jumped out to a 1-0 match lead after hitting .333 in the opening set. The Lancers got behind Shi who ripped six kills while Dyk had two assists in the set. The Lancers also went 15-for-19 (78 percent) on side out attempts in the set.
The second set saw nine lead changes and 17 ties with the last coming at 23-23. The Lancers were able to tie the set on a Westmont service error and then closed out the set with back-to-back kills from Dyk and Shi.
Leading 19-15 in the third set, the Lancers used a 5-0 run, including a pair of aces from Oliver, to take a 24-19 lead to set up match point. Westmont answered with four straight, but Rauschenbach sealed it with a kill.
“This team is great about picking up on things especially since we are young,” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “I'm starting to worry a bit though that we might be forgetting some of the stuff we learned earlier. We need to find that good balance. “
The Lancers don't have much turnaround time this week as they host Azusa Pacific, Thursday, at 7 p.m. and then travel to NCAA Division II No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino, Saturday.
