RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? California Baptist had 15 different players score goals in a pair of wins over Whittier, 9-6, and Chaffey, 17-6.
The Lancers (13-5) trailed, 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and 5-2 early in the second, but used a 5-0 run to take control and never trailed again in the win over the Poets while three different Lancers scored hat tricks against the Panthers.
“We probably played more games than we have ever played at this point in the season,” said CBU head coach Rick Rowland. “The guys are probably gamed-out right now. I don't think we were very serious during warm ups and we came out and didn't connect on our 6-on-5 opportunities and we didn't play very good 6-on-5 defense.”
After Brent Troutman scored the opening goal of the game against Whittier, the Poets outscored CBU 4-1 through the rest of the first quarter. Whittier recorded another goal just over two minutes into the second quarter, before the Lancer offense woke up.
CBU got consecutive goals from Aaron Steiger, Alex Shorts and Alan Ogden to tie the game at 5-5 at the end of the half.
The Lancers took their first lead of the game, at 6-5, on a 6-on-5 goal from Ogden, before Peter Hines made it 7-5 late in the third. The Poets answered with a goal with just 24 seconds left in the third to make it 7-6 heading into the fourth.
The Lancers defense turned up the pressure holding the Poets scoreless in the fourth and Jeff Woolstenhulme scored the final two goals of the game to seal it for CBU.
Beau Brumley, Nick Schofield and Chris Toy all scored a trio of goals in the win over Chaffey. The Lancers outscored the Panthers 7-0 in the first quarter and held a 12-3 lead at the half. Even after pulling back on the reins in the second half, CBU outscored Chaffey 5-3.
“There was a lot of young talent in the pool for us against Chaffey,” said Rowland. “It was good to see them get an opportunity to show what they have. Nick and Beau can definitely go down to the post and hold their own. They have very good hands and they are our post guys of the future.”
Chris Gwinn, Kellan Frericks and Nick Janzen all scored two goals while Nick Rocca and Alex Shorts each scored single goals.
Zach Bowman recorded eight saves on the day while Dylan Cox notched five.
“Zach played well today only allowing six goals and some of those weren't his fault,” said Rowland. “We gave them (Whittier) too many good looks.”
