SAN DIEGO ? California Baptist wound up on either side of a dominating performance with an 18-3 loss to No. 8 Loyola-Marymount and a 12-8 win over Cal Lutheran.
A rough opening contest for the Lancers, Loyola-Marymount started scoring early and never really stopped. The Lions scored the first four goals of the game before Aaron Steiger put CBU on the board with 2:03 left in the first.
That was the last goal CBU scored until late in the fourth as the Lions scored the next 14 goals to take an 18-1 lead. Chris Toy broke the scoreless drought with 1:13 left to play and Brett Landfield added a goal with 16 seconds left to round out the scoring.
In the nightcap, Steiger notched his second hat trick of the year and Jeff Woolstenhulme scored a pair of goals to lead the Lancers over the Kingsmen.
Alan Ogden, Toy, Jason Bills and Norbert Karoly scored the first four goals of the game as CBU blanked Cal Lutheran in the opening quarter.
After CLU got on the board in the second, Nick Schofield, Steiger and Woolstenhulme scored consecutive goals to but the Lancers up 7-1 and held a 7-2 lead at the half.
Steiger opened the third with back-to-back goals to help CBU jump out to a 9-2 lead before Woolstenhulme's second goal put the Lancers up 10-3. Peter Hines and Chris Gwinn each added a solo goal in the fourth as CBU held off the Kingsmen in the final minutes.
CBU will now play Claremont Mudd-Scripps Sunday at 8 a.m. and with a win it will play at 11 a.m. against Pomona-Pitzer and with a loss it will play at 2 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
