SAN JOSE, CA--- The California Baptist University men's water polo team finished out the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament on Saturday as they faced off against #15 San Jose State and #6 Princeton in San Jose, California.
CBU would drop both contests in high-scoring affairs to bring their record to 22-8 overall.
G1 at San Jose State:
The Lancers would face the Spartans in the opener on day two of the Julian Frasier Memorial Tournament, renewing an old conference rivalry from CBU's WCC days. CBU faced SJSU in each of the last three WCC Championships matches, with the Spartans winning two of the three.
The Spartans got off to a hot start in the match, scoring four of the five opening goals in the first period. The Lancers would fight back in the second period and play the Spartans even, resulting in a 5-5 frame. San Jose would still lead 10-8 after 16 minutes. The Spartans would double up the Lancers in the third period by a score of 6-3.
The Spartans' offense did not slow down in the fourth period, as they once again outscored CBU and finished off the match with a 20-14 win, securing a cross-conference victory. Andrea Nuzzo and Whitley Beamon would both score five points in the defeat, with Beamon leading the charge with three goals and two assists. Rafa Martinez and Aidan Olson both scored two goals, while Michael Abshier tied for the team lead with three assists.
G2 vs Princeton:
In the second match of the day, the Lancers would get a rematch with #6 Princeton. CBU fell 8-12 to Princeton at the MPSF Invitational earlier this season and was looking to tie the season series.
Defenses prevailed in the first period as neither team allowed much offense to commence. Princeton would take a one-point lead under two minutes as the Tigers led 3-2 after eight minutes of action. CBU's offense played much cleaner in the second period, scoring five goals, including two from Wyatt Bugbee, to tie the match at 7 -7 heading into halftime.
CBU would win the third period by a score of 4-2, including scoring four of the final five goals of the period to take an 11-10 lead to begin the fourth period. The Lancer offense dried up in the fourth as they could not convert on any of their shots, while the Tigers scored four goals in the frame to win the match 14-11.
Nuzzo did all he could in the loss, scoring two goals and adding four assists to lead all players with six points. Bugbee and Martinez each scored two goals, while Tyler Carson would tally six saves in the cage.
NEXT: The Lancers will return home for a conference matchup against Long Beach State on Saturday, October 31, at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
