RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Just hours after No. 2 California Baptist and No. 3 Concordia swapped rankings in the in the newest NAIA Women's Volleyball Top 25 Poll, the Lancers held up the vote with a 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 25-22) win over the Eagles.
In a gym with filled more pink than a second-grade ballet, the Lancers (17-2, 7-2 GSAC) stayed unbeaten at home on Dig Pink Night and ran their winning streak against the Eagles (19-3, 6-3 GSAC) in Van Dyne Gym to six straight. Dig Pink is a national rally sponsored by the Side-Out Foundation that raises money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer.
Fei Shi, and the Lancers, may have worn pink uniforms, but they saw nothing but red against their conference rivals. The senior blasted a season-high 22 kills, hit .333, and tied a career-high with 18 digs. It was Shi's 10th double-double on the season. Shi also added three aces.
Ingrid Carmona chimed in with 13 kills while Melinda Adelin added nine kills off the bench. Krista Hasemeyer posted her third double-double of the season with a match-high 31 assists and 10 digs. Danielle Sargant dished out 18 assists.
Kari Oliver was just two digs shy of tying her career-high with 21 while Noelle Dyk and Katie Lockard each had 11. Bree Rauschenbach also recorded a match-high four blocks.
CBU and Concordia traded three leads early in the first set before the Lancers took the final lead at 14-13. Shi tied the set at 13 with a kill that sparked a 5-0 run to give CBU a 17-13 lead. The Eagles scored two straight to make it 17-15, but that was as close as Concordia came. The Lancers held the Eagles to just a .105 clip and Shi had six kills in the set.
The Eagles answered back in the second after falling behind 5-1. The Eagles took the lead for good at 11-8 with a 10-3 run. Concordia took its biggest lead at 17-10 before the Lancers got within two at 24-22. Jillian Lane shut down the late run with a kill for the Eagles to tie the match at 1-1.
The Lancers unloaded in the third hitting a .302 (20-4-53) clip. CBU trailed 7-5, but scored four straight, including a pair of kills from Carmona to take a 9-7 lead. The Lancers broke the set open, after leading 15-13, when Adelin sparked a 10-5 run to close out the set.
In the final set, CBU broke an 8-8 tie with a 9-3 run to take a 17-11 lead. The Eagles answered with a 10-4 run to tie it at 21. Colleen Sweeney put CBU up 22-21 with a kill, but a Lancer service error tied the set at 22. A Concordia error gave CBU the lead at 23-22 and Shi put the match on ice with a pair kills.
The Lancers now travel to Hope International, Saturday, for a 7 p.m. GSAC contest.
