FRESNO, Calif. --- In one of the most anticipated matches of the season in the NAIA, the NAIA's No. 2-ranked and defending GSAC Champion Fresno Pacific upended No. 5 California Baptist University, 7-2, Saturday afternoon at the Haak Tennis Center in Fresno.
The win keeps the Sunbirds unbeaten as they improve to 3-0 overall, 1-0 GSAC. The Lancers fall to 1-1, 0-1.
The Sunbirds got a big boost and a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 lead when they swept all three doubles' matches. They carried that lead and momentum into singles' play where they ended up winning four of the six matches, though three of those four went three sets.
Jose Hilla quickly defeated Rekhi Little, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6, and then Fabio Silva downed two-time All-American Alessandro Ventre, 7-6 (1), 0-6, 6-1, at No. 1 to clinch the match.
The Lancers picked up their first point at No. 2 when Carlos Cirne-Lima defeated Vicente Joli, 7-5, 6-3. Martin Vaisse gave the Lancers their other point with a 5-7, 6-2, (10-4) win over Marco Foelz at No. 5.
Alex Gonzalez needed three sets (4-6, 6-1, 6-0) to defeat Lucas Pereira at No.3, and so did Maxime Adam, who downed Oliver Andrzjczuk, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 4.
