BEAUMONT, Calif. --- NCAA Division I Long Beach State blazed the back nine to blow open a tight match and defeat California Baptist University, 393-364, in a rare dual match-up Monday afternoon at Oak Valley Golf Club.
The 49ers led the Lancers by just four strokes at the turn but then turned it up a notch and rolled to the 29-stroke victory. Both teams played six players and counted five scores.
“This was a great learning experience for the guys to be able to play with a very competitive Division I program,” said CBU Head Coach Lane Pace. “We were able to stay with them for nine holes, but their experience showed on the back nine, and as a result they were able to pull away from us. We made a few mistakes at the wrong time, but this was very helpful in preparing us for our next tournament.”
Long Beach State's Kevin Roy led all players with 70. Kevin Lim and Steve Gibson each added a 71 to pace the 49ers. Michael Drake and Ricky Montanez each tallied a 76, and Isse Suenaga finished with an 83.
Andrew Falero and Carl-Johan Stjarnfalt both finished with a 76 to lead the Lancers. Marcelo Souza added a 77. Bradley Strzelczyk and Fernando Menendez both chipped in with an 82, and Tim Tait tallied an 83.
