IRVINE, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 4-ranked California Baptist University swept through doubles' play and then rolled to wins in five of six singles' matches to post an 8-1 win at No. 6 Concordia Tuesday evening.
The win is the Lancers' eighth straight overall and sixth straight over a ranked opponent. They improve to 9-1 overall, 7-1 GSAC and set the stage for Thursday's showdown with No. 2 Fresno Pacific at the Pentz Tennis Center.
Concordia has its seven-game winning streak snapped as it falls to 9-3, 6-2.
“I am extremely proud of how the guys played today,” said CBU Head Coach Chris Taylor. “Their intensity and will to win was simply outstanding, but I don't want anyone taking this 8-1 win for granted. One look at the scores and you know that match could have gone either way. Make no mistake, Concordia is a very strong team, and we will have to bring our best game just as we did today when they come to our courts next month.”
The Lancers wasted no time jumping out to a 3-0 lead, sweeping through doubles for just the fifth time in 10 matches this season. They carried that momentum into singles' play, but three of their wins came in tiebreakers.
Martin Vaisse at No. 4 brought the Lancers within one point of the win, and after Kareem Berdai put the Eagles on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lucas Pereira at No. 3, Carlos Cirne-Lime at No. 2 clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Augusto Elias. The three remaining matches went to a third set tiebreaker, and the Lancers won all three.
