RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Playing in tough, breezy conditions, the NAIA's No. 2-ranked California Baptist University won its 14th straight match with an 8-1 thumping of No. 6 Vanguard Tuesday afternoon. The Lancers swept through all six singles' matches.
The Lancers improve to 15-1 overall, 12-1 GSAC, maintaining a first place tie with No. 4-ranked Fresno Pacific atop the conference standings. The Lions drop to 13-6, 8-6.
CBU took a 2-0 lead with wins at No. 1 (8-3) and No. 2 (8-1) doubles. The Lions were able to salvage a point with an 8-5 win at No. 3 to stay within striking distance.
However, the Lancers turned up the pressure in singles and quickly took a 3-1 lead when Tino Brodar retired in the first set at No. 3. The Lancers won all of the remaining five courts, each of them in straight sets. Both Gabor Toth at No. 6 and Carlos Cirne-Lima at No. 2 won their respective matches by identical 6-2, 6-1 scores.
“I couldn't be more proud of how the guys performed today,” said CBU Head Coach Chris Taylor, who improved to 4-2 all-time against his alma mater. “In the kind of wind we had today, you have to serve well, and that is exactly what the guys did. I thought we were very impressive doubles, and then they really put the pedal to the metal in singles.”
