RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University men's soccer head coach Ryan Jorden has released the Lancers' 2009 schedule.
CBU has a full slate of 18 games, eight non-conference games followed by 10 Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) dates. Seven of the eight non-conference games are on the road, two of them against NCAA Division I opponents.
“This is a competitive schedule from top to bottom,” said Jorden, who in his first year at the helm led the Lancers to the playoffs for the first time since 1990. “We have some challenges, but one thing is for sure, when the GSAC season begins we will be well-tested and well-traveled.”
Jorden's second season kicks off Saturday, Aug. 15 when the Lancers host Cal State San Bernardino at 5 p.m. After that, they don't return to Lancer Field until Sept. 30 when they host Biola in their GSAC home opener at 4 p.m.
After clashing with the Coyotes to open the season, the Lancers travel to Cal State L.A. Aug. 18 before taking on UNLV (Aug. 22) and UC Riverside (Aug. 29) on consecutive Saturdays. Three days after playing across town at UCR, the Lancers head to NCAA Division III Claremont-Mudd, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m.
The non-conference slate concludes with a road trip to Portland, Ore., to take on 2008 NAIA Tournament participant Concordia (Ore.) (Sept. 5) and NCAA Division III Linfield (Ore.) (Sept. 7). After an 11-day break, the Lancers travel to NCAA Division III UC Santa Cruz for their final GSAC tune-up Sept. 18.
CBU opens its 2009 GSAC campaign at GSAC Tournament Champion and national tournament participant Westmont (Sept. 26) before hosting Biola. The 10-game conference slate features home games against national tournament participants Fresno Pacific (Oct. 10) and Concordia in the regular-season finale, Oct. 31.
The GSAC Tournament begins Nov. 4. The NAIA National Tournament Opening Round is Nov. 21, and the final site is Nov. 30-Dec. 5 in Fresno, Calif.
This past season, the Lancers finished 7-8-3 overall, 3-5-2 GSAC. They return 15 players, including lone All-GSAC honoree Gabriel Gonzalez, from a team that made just the program's second postseason appearance ever.
