GREAT FALLS, Mont. — No. 3 California Baptist made a grand opening statement with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-15) win over Montana State-Northern in the opening day of the UGF/Carroll Holiday Inn Classic.
Noelle Dyk picked right up where she left off in 2008 with a double-double. The senior led the Lancers (1-0) with 13 kills, 11 digs and four blocks. She was just one block shy of tying a career-high. Three-time All-American Fei Shi ripped seven kills.
All three of CBU's freshmen played big roles, including Danielle Sargant who served five aces. That was the most by any freshman in a single-match since Mical Bell had five against San Diego Christian, Sept. 9, 2006. Katie Lockard also got into double figures, posting 10 digs in just two sets and Megan Johnson had six kills.
“Our defense played pretty well tonight and that's what we have really worked on so far this year,” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “We kept (MSUN) to a low hitting percentage, but we just are not putting attacks away. We might see some long rallies this year, but hopefully we can win most of those.”
As a team the Lancers had 13 team blocks, the most since in a single match since CBU had 14 against Biola in a September 2006 contests. The Lancers also notched 52 digs.
CBU returns to action tomorrow with a pair of matches against Rocky Mountain and Great Falls.
