GREAT FALLS, Mont. – California Baptist University continued to mow through the season opening competition, winning both matches in its second day of the UGF/Carroll Holiday Inn Classic. The Lancers (3-0) swept their second straight opponent with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-17) win over Rocky Mountain and then outlasted Great Falls with a 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16) victory.
Fei Shi notched her first two double-doubles of the year, notching 10 kills and 12 digs against RMC and had two season highs against UGF with 16 kills and 14 digs. She also posted four blocks against the Battlin' Bears and three against the Argonauts.
“Fei played exceptionally well tonight, hitting nearly .500 in both matches,” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “We need performances like that from more than just Noelle (Dyk) and Fei to really be that top level team. We have our two go-to people and we really need that third person to step up and be a difference maker.”
Shi was the only Lancers in double figure kills and hit .500 (10-1-18) in the opener. Megan Johnson had a season-high seven kills and four blocks while Danielle Sargant and Krista Hasemeyer combined for 32 assists with Sargant dishing out a match-high 21. Katie Lockard also recorded a season-high 12 digs.
CBU hit .380 (38-8-79) for the match while holding Rocky Mountain to a -.042 (21-25-96) hitting percentage. The Lancers also matched a team season-high with 13 blocks and won the digs battle 41-30.
Dyk posted her second double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs in the win over Great Falls. Sargant also dished out a season-high 31 assists while Hasemeyer had 11. Bree Rauschenbach contributed with three aces, three blocks, four digs and four kills. Johnson also posted four blocks.
The Lancers never hit above .260 in any set, hitting .211 (45-21-114) for the entire match, but they were able to hold the Argonauts to just a .033 (32-28-122) clip.
“We came out on Great Falls early and got the serving game going,” said McGuyre. “We got in trouble in the second because we lost our edge on the serves, but once we got back on track we were able to put them away. “
The Lancers close out the classic tomorrow in Helena, Mont., at Carroll with a pair of matches against Montana Tech and Carroll.
