RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Ryan McGuyre has ran down a few milestones since becoming California Baptist University's head women's volleyball coach in 2002. McGuyre chalked up another milestone Tuesday night, recording his 200th win at the helm of the women's team with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-20) sweep over No. 7 Point Loma Nazarene. He has over 400 career wins between men's and women's volleyball.
The third-ranked Lancers (13-0, 3-0 GSAC) increased their winning streak to 13 in-a-row, the most wins to start a season since McGuyre took the reins. It's also the best start to a conference season since 2006.
Eight different Lancers recorded kills with freshman Ingrid Carmona leading the way with 13. Fei Shi was next on the list with nine while Noelle Dyk, Colleen Sweeney and Bree Rauschenbach each had five. Shi also served four aces. Danielle Sargant dished out 22 assists while Krista Hasemeyer had 13.
Dyk had 13 digs while Kari Oliver had 11. Rauschenbach also had a match-high four blocks.
The Lancers spread the ball around in the opening set as six players recorded a kill and only Carmona ripped more than three kills. CBU hit .371 (16-3-35) and never trailed the entire set. After breaking a 3-3 tie, Rauschenbach sparked a 4-0 run that put CBU up 7-3. The Lancers pushed it out to a six-point lead on three occasions with the last coming at 18-12. The Sea Lions fired back, scoring four straight to force a CBU timeout. The Lancers responded with three consecutive points to lead 21-16 and cruised from there to go up 1-0 in the match.
CBU and Point Loma traded leads early in the second before the Lancers forced a timeout after taking a 13-9 lead. The Sea Lions worked their way back into set eventually, tying it up at 18. Dyk ripped a kill before a Sea Lion error and a Shi kill as the Lancers took a 21-18 lead. Point Loma couldn't do much to stop the momentum as CBU scored four of the last five points to take the second set.
The Lancers trailed most of the final set and were down 17-14 when Carmona blasted a kill to spark an 11-3 run to close out the match.
CBU will now travel to El Cajon, Saturday, for a 7 p.m. GSAC contest against San Diego Christian.
