COSTA MESA, Calif. — Just when California Baptist University thought everything was back to normal after forcing a fifth set with Vanguard, the unranked Lions shocked CBU by taking the final set, the match and the Lancers' school record 14-match winning streak.
The Lancers (14-1, 4-1 GSAC) dug a big hole early, going down two sets to none, but fought back to tie the match at 2-2. The Lions (9-5, 3-2 GSAC) battled back to win the final set to bring down No. 3 CBU with a 3-2 (25-18, 25-22, 16-25, 20-25, 15-13) upset.
It was the first time since 2006 and the first time in The Pit since 2003 that Vanguard had knocked off the Lancers.
Despite having just four kills in the first two sets, Fei Shi finished with 19 for CBU and added 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Jessica Ewoldt finished with 14 kills while Colleen Sweeney and Megan Johnson had 10, a career-high for Johnson. Krista Hasemeyer also posted a season-high 43 assists while Katie Lockard recorded a team-high 13 digs.
CBU outhit Vanguard, .293-287, and also recorded more digs, 52-49, but the Lions posted eight blocks compared to the Lancers' six.
The Lions busted up an 8-8 tie in the opening set with four straight points to lead 12-8. The closest the Lancers came was at 14-12, but Vanguard stunned CBU with an 11-6 run to take the first set. The Lions hit a ridiculous .516 clip (18-2-31) in the first set which fueled the Lions out to the 1-0 match lead.
Vanguard surprised CBU again in the second set after 16 ties when they used three straight points to break a 21-21 tie and tallied set point at 24-21. A VUSC service error made it 24-22, but The Lions' Kelsey Wirt ripped a kill to seal the set and a 2-0 match lead for Vanguard.
Fighting for their undefeated lives, the Lancers got a huge spark from Shi with seven kills in the third set alone. The senior ignited a 17-5 run to put CBU up 22-13, but Vanguard answered with three straight to make it 22-16. The Lancers responded with a kill each from Ewoldt, Rene Simon and Shi to take their first set of the match.
CBU looked to be cruising to a fourth set win after leading 10-6, on a 5-0 run, but the Lions cut their deficit to one three times with the last coming at 19-18. That was as close as Vanguard came the Lancers sent the match to a fifth and final set by closing out the fourth with a 6-2 run.
Vanguard put CBU on its heels early in the final set by climbing out to a 7-3 lead. The Lancers gritted their way back to a 1-point deficit twice with the last coming at 10-9, but a Hasemeyer service error and Wirt kill gave the lead to the Lions at 12-9. Shi made it 12-10 with a kill, but Wirt ripped back-to-back kills to give match point to VUSC. After a CBU timeout, Sweeney recorded a kill to make it 14-11 and Ewoldt brought the Lancers within two with another kill. A Wirt error put CBU within one point of tying the set at 14-13, but Wirt redeemed herself with the final kill of the match.
Wirt finished with a match-high 23 kills.
CBU will now host Biola, Saturday, at 7 p.m.
