RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University added two more wins to its season total, moving to 10-2 on the season. CBU's first win came over Occidental 13-7. The Lancers then defeated Chapman 19-7 to sweep through the Lancer Invite.
In a game that saw 13 different Lancers score, CBU had no problem rolling through its contest with the Panthers. CBU scored early and often, without allowing Chapman the chance to keep up. The Lancers took an 11-3 advantage into halftime, and continued to pile on the points through the second half. Though the Panthers made an effort to catch up in the second half, they were stunned by the Lancer's quick-firing offense and CBU took the contest.
Chris Toy led scoring for the Lancers with four goals, bringing his Lancer Invite total to 12 goals in the two-day tournament. Aaron Steiger added three goals for the Lancers and Chris Gwinn netted two goals for CBU. Austen Ramer posted seven saves in goal.
In the No. 19-ranked Lancers first game of the day, CBU handily knocked off Occidental College. The game started off slow, with very little action, but with just under four minutes left in the first quarter, CBU netted two goals to take a 2-0 lead. The Lancer offense came to life in the second quarter as they scored four more goals to grab a 6-1 advantage over the Tigers at halftime.
The Lancers continued to dominate the scoreboard, racking up an 11-2 lead by the end of three quarters. However, the Tigers mounted a comeback effort one minute into the fourth quarter, rattling off four unmatched goals, cutting the Lancer lead to six, at 12-6. The Tigers comeback bid fell short, though, as the clock ran out, giving the Lancers their ninth win of the season.
Steiger led all scorers in the contest with four goals, while Toy added two more scores to his season total. Freshman Cody Gagnon posted four saves in the goal for the Lancers.
The Lancers will be in action again Oct. 2 in the Claremont Convergence tournament in Claremont, Calif.
