RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Over the last few matches, it's been a few different ladies sharing the spotlight for No. 3 California Baptist University. The spotlight grew even bigger Tuesday night as nine players recorded a kill in a 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-15) sweep over The Master's.
Freshman Melinda Adelin posted a career-high 10 kills for the Lancers (16-1, 6-1 GSAC) and had just one error in 12 attempts for a .750 hitting percentage. The Mulhouse, France native also added three blocks.
“It was nice to see Melinda beat up on somebody else,” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “She's been taking us apart in practice and has really worked hard to get used to our system.”
Fei Shi also chipped in with eight kills while Ingrid Carmona had six and Noelle Dyk had five. Dyk also had three aces and 11 digs. Krista Hasemeyer dished out a match-high 34 assists and added an ace as well. Kari Oliver posted a match-high 12 digs while Bree Rauschenbach tied a season-high with six blocks.
As a team, CBU hit .367 (41-12-79), almost doubled The Mustang's digs (47-24) and out blocked TMC (7.5-3).
The Lancers hit .458 (17-4-29) in the opening set and never trailed. CBU scored the first four points of the set and quickly moved out to a 10-3 lead. The Mustangs got back within seven later in the set at 17-10, but CBU blasted through the set with an 8-2 run to take the 1-0 match lead.
The Master's took the first lead of the second set at 1-0, but the Lancers scored four straight to take the 4-1 lead. CBU led 6-4 before closing the set on a 19-6 run. Adelin ripped six kills on six attempts in the set. The Lancers hit .462 (14-2-26) and were 9-for-10 on sideout attempts.
In the final set, the Lancers broke away from a 7-7 tie with a 10-2 run sparked by an Adelin kill and capped by a Jessica Ewoldt kill. After the Mustangs scored two straight to make it 17-11, CBU closed out the match with an 8-4 run.
The Lancers now head to No. 1 Fresno Pacific for a 3 p.m. Saturday GSAC contest. CBU has not won in at FPU since 1993.
