FRESNO, Calif. — It was in their sights; the chance of ending a 13-match losing streak at Fresno Pacific looked attainable, but No. 3 California Baptist University watched No. 1 Fresno Pacific come back from being down, 2-1, to win 3-2 (25-19, 18-25, 29-31, 25-18, 15-10).
The Lancers (16-2, 6-2 GSAC) could not hand the two-time defending national champions their first loss of the season. The Sunbirds (18-0, 8-0 GSAC) increase their winning streak at home against CBU to 14.
Bree Rauschenbach and Melinda Adelin led the way for the Lancers with Rauschenbach totaling 10 kills, five digs and two blocks while Adelin had 11 kills, three digs and three blocks. Rauschenbach hit .429 and Adelin hit .375.
Ingrid Carmona posted a team-high 15 kills while Fei Shi and Noelle Dyk each notched 12 kills. Carmona and Shi though both hit under .200 as Carmona hit .179 and Shi hit .091. Shi posted her 10th double-double with 12 digs.
Kari Oliver had a team-high 14 digs while Krista Hasemeyer and Danielle Sargant split setting duties with Hasemeyer dishing out a team high 37 assists.
The Sunbirds scored the first five points of the opening set, but the Lancers cut it to 6-4 on a 4-1 run. CBU got within two again at 8-6, but that was as close as they came the rest of the set. FPU then used a 12-6 run to take its biggest lead of the set at 20-12. The Lancers answered back with a 6-1 run capped a Hasemeyer kill to make it 21-18, but the Sunbirds took a 1-0 match lead on a 4-1 run to end the set.
CBU bounced back in the second set by jumping out a 4-1 lead, one it never relinquished. FPU eventually tied the set at 7-7, but never regained the lead after starting out ahead 1-0. The Lancers broke the 7-7 tie on an Adelin kill for their first of three straight points. CBU later led 14-12 before Adelin sparked an 11-6 run to close out the set and tie the match at 1-1.
Neither team led by more than three in the third set with each taking a lead. The Lancers led early at 4-1 and led 6-4 before the Sunbirds used a 4-0 run to take an 8-6 lead. CBU closed the gap to one 10 different times before eventually tying the set at 23-23 on an FPU error. Michelle Johnson gave FPU set point at 24-23, but two straight errors by the Sunbirds gave set point to CBU at 25-24. FPU answered with a kill from Martina Gregusova and a CBU error gave set point back to FPU at 26-25. Adelin and Dyk ripped back-to-back kills to give CBU the lead at 27-26, but the Sunbirds tied it back up at 27. After ties at 28 and 29, Sweeney gave set point to the Lancers with a kill and Carmona put the set away with a kill at 31-29.
The Sunbirds broke a 13-13 tie midway through the fourth and used a 9-3 run, after leading 16-15, to close out the fourth set and tie the match at 2-2.
In the final set, the Lancers led 8-7, but the Sunbirds used an 8-2 run to close out the match.
The Lancers don't get a break as they host No. 2 Concordia Tuesday, at 7 p.m., inside Van Dyne Gym. The GSAC contest is featured as the 2009 Dig Pink game in which all proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the fight against breast cancer.
