FRESNO, Calif. --- Defending GSAC Champion Fresno Pacific got a game-high 23 points from reigning GSAC Player of the Year James Lewis and used two huge runs to close the first half and start the second half to blow open a tight game and roll to a 80-39 win over California Baptist University in GSAC action Saturday night.
The loss drops the Lancers to 13-8 overall, 6-5 GSAC, while the Sunbirds improve to 16-5, 6-5.
The Lancers, who are third in the GSAC in field goal percentage shooting 48.1 percent, endured through their worst shooting night of the season shooting 28.2 percent, making a season-low 11 shots from the floor. The 39 points are also a season-low, and the Sunbirds' 80 points are the most the Lancers have allowed this season. As a result, it is the Lancers' worst loss since suffering through a 41-point (110-69) loss to eventual national champion Concordia Feb. 8, 2003.
Luke Evans led the Lancers with nine points. Davey Hopkins and Robert Rose each added six points apiece. Evans was 3-for-4 from the field. Rose and Hopkins each made two buckets. No other Lancer made more than one.
Lewis was 8-for-11 from the floor. Jesse Childs had 16 points, missing just two of his nine attempts from the field. Alex Davenport was 5-for-7 and finished with 13 points.
Leading 16-10, the Sunbirds closed the final 6:07 of the first half with a 16-6 run to take a 32-16 lead into the locker room. The Lancers made just four first half buckets and had just one in the final 10 minutes.
It didn't get any better in the second half as the Sunbirds carried the momentum over and then some as they opened the second half with a 26-5 flurry to open a 56-21 lead with 10:39 to play. The Lancers had just one field goal in that run, a Hopkins lay-up with just 2:56 gone by in the half. The other three Lancer points came off free throws, all of them in trips where the Lancers went 1-for-2 at the line.
In all, the Lancers were just 11-for-39 from the field and 15-for-32 (46.8 percent) from the line, making more free throws than field goals for the first time since Dec. 19, 2008 when they had 29 free throws and 27 field goals in an overtime win over St. Vincent (Pa.).
