RIVERSIDE --- Guard Dominique Daniels Jr. dropped 26 points on Utah Tech as the Lancers won their fourth straight behind Wednesday's 73-64 final. CBU is now 9-0 at home ahead of Saturday's Star Wars Night clash with Utah Valley.
The Lancers, who started the WAC season 0-3, are now 4-3 after their second win of the season against Utah Tech. The Trailblazers came into Wednesday tied with the Lancers for third place in the conference standings, but they now sit 3-4 in WAC action.
Daniels Jr. hit 20 points for the 12th time this season as he did so on 9-of-20 from the field on Wednesday. The graduate guard has scored 20 points in four of CBU's last five games. He also contributed to the win with five boards and five assists.
Martel Williams also closed in double-figures with 13 points on 6-of-10 from the field.
It was a slow first half for both sides on Wednesday as neither team dropped 30 points in the first 20 minutes. The Lancers led by three, 29-26, at the intermission backed by a 48 percent shooting performance.
Things then heated up in the second half, starting with an 8-2 CBU run to give the Lancers a nine-point advantage. Utah Tech countered with six unanswered, pulling them within three, but then six-straight CBU points gave CBU breathing room once again.
CBU's lead never dropped lower than six for the remaining ten minutes of regulation, and it jumped to as many as 12. The final blow to Utah Tech's comeback bid came when a foul to Chance Trujillo was followed by two technicals, giving Daniels Jr. six attempts from the charity stripe with less than two minutes remaining.
Daniels Jr. hit all six as he ended the night 7-of-10 at the line.
Head coach Rick Croy spoke about CBU's second half effort, noting, "We took great care of the ball in the second half. I don't think we had a turnover in the second half, and that's really important. We started the game with four turnovers in the first six possessions, and it just got us off to a weird start, but our guys kept playing."
CBU closed the game with seven turnovers, all coming in the first half.
The Lancers ended Wednesday's win shooting 57 percent at the charity stripe and 47.5 percent from the field. Utah Tech shot 37 percent from the field and made all ten of their free throw attempts.
Jusaun Holt led the Trailblazers with 21 points off the bench. Ethan Potter led all players with ten boards, while the Lancers outrebounded the Trailblazers, 40-36.
CBU's next test will be a big one, as the Lancers welcome Utah Valley to the Fowler Events Center for the Star Wars Night. Utah Valley beat the Lancers earlier this season in Orem.
Saturday's game could play a pivotal role in postseason seeding, as the Lancers sit just one game behind the Wolverines. Utah Valley lost on Wednesday against Southern Utah, dropping UVU to 5-2 in conference action.
The first 2,000 fans in attendance on Saturday will receive a free CBU Light Sword. Tickets are on sale HERE.
