SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --- The firepower of Jane Chafeh and NCAA Division II No. 8-ranked Cal State San Bernardino was too much for No. 6 California Baptist University Thursday night, as the Coyotes defeated the Lancers 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 15-25, 25-20)
In just its second non-conference match since beginning GSAC play in September, CBU fell to 23-4 on the season. It is CBU's first non-conference loss in 14 matches this year.
The Coyotes seemed to have all the momentum heading into the third set after taking the first two with ease, when the Lancers caught fire and forced a fourth game. CSUSB wasted no time getting things right back on track, however, winning the final game 25-20.
CBU hit .515 in the third set and scored 18 kills. It was the only set in which the Lancers hit above their season average of .267 and scored more than 15 kills. CBU hit just .174 for the match.
The defense, which has been the foundation of CBU's success, just didn't have an answer for Chafeh. The senior returning All-American and West Region Player of the Year, led all players with 21 kills on the night.
CBU's Ingrid Carmona was the only other player in double digits in the match, notching 17 kills to go along with 14 digs and five service aces. All three totals were team highs for the Lancers.
Since beginning the season 18-0, CBU has not been able to string together more than two wins in a row. Still, with seven GSAC matches to go, the Lancers sit just a match back of Biola for the third spot in the conference standings. CBU also currently has the second best overall record in the conference.
The Lancers resume GSAC play against San Diego Christian Saturday. Thursday's match was the last non-conference matchup of the year for CBU.
