CLAREMONT, Calif. --- It took three late goals for No. 16 California Baptist University to defeat No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer 9-7.
Head Coach Rick Rowland summed up the game perfectly saying, “It was ugly, but we won it.”
It was a rare start for CBU (25-5), as the team failed to take an early lead ending the first tied 3-3. The Lancers have grown accustomed to starting in front, outscoring their opponents 102-36 in the opening quarter through the first 29 games.
Nevertheless CBU did take a slim advantage at the half, going up 5-4. However, the lead didn't last as the Sagehens bombarded the Lancers with a three goal quarter while just surrendering one CBU goal.
Heading into the final period the Lancers faced a potential third straight loss trailing 6-7.
The Lancers couldn't get anything going until crunch time, when the three different players scored to lead the comeback.
Trevor Rowland began the barrage with a 6-on-5 goal (their only of the night out of five chances).
Brent Troutman then gave the Lancers the lead with his second goal of the match.
And finally, Chris Toy sealed the game with a counter attack goal as CBU notched the team's 25th win of the season and 12th in their last 14.
Goalkeeper Austen Ramer was superb, shutting out Pomona-Pitzer in the concluding quarter. He had 11 saves and five steals on the night.
Aaron Steiger continued to wow opponents, scoring twice (104 on the season), while dishing out two assists. In addition the Senior added four more steals to his total, and drew two 5-meters (he made one of them).
The Lancers will head to Orange County to face Concordia on Thursday night, before hosting La Verne and Whittier on Saturday.
CBU has a chance to get within a game of the school's record 29 wins this weekend.
