SIOUX CITY, Iowa --- It took five sets and a couple of extra points, but No. 6 California Baptist University narrowly escaped with a 3-2 (25-19, 25-10, 23-25, 22-25, 17-15) win over No. 21 Bellevue (Neb.) in the teams' opening match at the NAIA National Championship.
The Lancers took the first two sets in the match, before allowing the Bruins to climb back in with a couple of wins of their own. It took some clutch plays down the stretch to get the win, as CBU was behind most of the fifth set.
“I definitely like how we handled the adversity,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “Some of it was a little self imposed and we need to correct that, but the girls dug deep and got the win and that's what I'm proud of.”
After getting a solid win in the first game, CBU made quick work of the second set, winning by 15 points and seemed to be cruising to a sweep. The Bruins however, energized by a fired up bench and a good number of home fans that made the 90 minute drive from Bellevue, pulled out two hard-fought wins to push the match to five.
With all the momentum on their side, Bellevue jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the deciding game and forced a CBU timeout. The Bruins would hold that advantage for much of the set, pushing the score to 12-9.
It wasn't until that 12th point scored by the Bruins that CBU finally awoke from its' two and a half game slumber and clawed back into the match.
Ingrid Carmona smashed a kill over the top of the Bruin block and then after a Bellevue error, did almost exactly the same thing to even the match at 12-12. Out of a Bellevue timeout, CBU went right back to Carmona, who ripped her match-high 27th kill, giving the Lancers their first lead of the set at 13-12.
The two teams traded points to push the score to 14-14, when Bree Rauschenbach ripped a quick strike down the center of the court to give CBU match-point. The Bruins, not ready to concede the match got a crucial kill from Kali Schnaker to stay alive.
Jessica Kalama had apparently seen enough and was ready to end the contest at that point. She gave CBU its second match-point of the day by sneaking a kill off the side of the Bruin block. Kalama again got the set on the next point and put the match away with her 14th kill of the night again off the Bruin block.
“Katie Lockard was really able to keep us in it late with some clutch digs as well,” said McGuyre. “Her steady play and Kari Oliver's leadership off the bench were key for us getting this win.”
Lockard led the Lancers with 15 digs in the match and Oliver had two of her seven digs in the fifth set.
“I think our worst match is behind us,” said McGuyre. “I would rather have our worst match and get a win, than have our worst match be our last one. I really think we'll only get better from here on out. Now we just have to worry about Lindenwood.”
The Lancers face Lindenwood in their second match of pool play, Wednesday at 11 a.m. (PST).
With Tuesday's win CBU moves to 30-5 on the season and 1-0 in pool play. Bellevue moves to 34-12, 0-1.
